Vertical Plyometrics

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Do Plyometric exercises in your work out. Plyometric exercises specifically load muscles into a lengthened position before exploding into a jump action. A good example is a squat jump. From standing upright you move into a squat position then without pausing you explode into a vertical jump. Upon landing you move down into a squat position for the next repetition. Do these only if you can easily squat your own bodyweight in the gym. Start with one set of twelve reps and increase to three sets of twelve reps over a few weeks. Another great exercise is one leg hopping. Hop forward for three steps on one leg followed by three steps on the other leg. Do twelve sets making sure you take long strides. Rest between hard training sessions. This is when you give your body a chance to rest your body and recovery can occur. Muscles need time to grow stronger. You need to rest at least two days after plyometic sessions. Nutrition is key to making gains. Adequate protein intake following exercise gives your body what it needs to grow and not breakdown. Branched chain amino acids post-exercise helps prevent muscle breakdown and increases muscle building. You need up to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram per day to ensure adequate recovery and growth when training. Stretch your way to increased height. Good flexibility is a prerequisite for good performance. Stretch all your major muscle groups. Hamstrings, quadriceps, calf muscles, groin muscles, gluteals, back muscles and shoulder muscles. Focus on form. Make sure you keep your head up and jump with your entire body not just your legs. Try to keep your knees over your big toes when you bend and don’t let them collapse in or out. If you can, get a friend to film you with a video camera and compare to a pro. Now you have a target to model your technique on.

Importance of Cardio Exercise

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Losing a little or a lot of fat involves the same concept, a consistent diet along with cardiovascular exercise and resistance training. This is the way in which the professionals lose weight, and that is how it works. If you’re overweight, you are sure you can not start a program of training with free weights and machines, but the benefits this gives you is much greater than you have ever thought off. Resistance training improves your loss by increasing fat to muscle mass, because more muscle mass means you will be burning more fat automatically therefore obtaining a fast and efficient metabolism. Apart from that, it also gives your skin and body more tone, firmness and better appearance, makes your bones strong, prevent hypertension, increases your strength, and improves your immune system, apart from improving your mood and giving you more energy during the day. The harsh truth is that when you start consuming a diet too low in calories your body prefers to use your existing muscle tissue for energy instead of using their reserves of fat. So, losing weight too fast is not a good thing. It is optimal to lose a steady and moderate pace, so that what you are losing is fat, and not just water weight or muscle. The ideal is to lose a maximum of 0.5 to 1.5 kilograms per week. If you are losing faster then you can be 99% sure that this is muscle wasting. Remember that you cannot burn fat in specific areas of the body. It is true that the more fat accumulates in the buttocks, hips and legs in women and around stomach, waist, back and low in the men but the reality is that you cannot simply do an exercise to reduce a specified area.

Alcohol and Weight Loss

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

If you have started a weight loss plan, then the one thing that you’ll definitely have to consider at some point or another, is what effect your alcohol consumption will have on you achieving your weight loss goals. People who drink as a regular part of their weekly routine are never going to achieve the same results as those who don’t. The first problem with regular alcohol consumption as a part of your diet, is the fact that it’s a source of empty calories. Empty calories have the same energy content as regular calories, but are nutritionally sparse by comparison. They lack the accompanying nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and antioxidants. As they have no additional nutritional value, calories from alcohol are mostly stored as fat. Add mixers to the alcohol, and things get even worse. Mixed drinks can often contain three hundred or more calories, which can easily sabotage your fat loss progress. In addition, alcohol can impair your judgement with regards to making smart food choices. How often does a heavy night out end with you craving foods high in salt and processed fats. So you could end up feasting on kebabs, wings, nachos and pizza while drinking as well. On an average night out, you could easily consume in excess of two thousand calories, which is almost the equivalent of half a pound of body fat. Moving along, the next thing that you’ll want to consider, is the effect that alcohol has on your body’s fat burning ability. Soon after consuming an alcohol beverage, all fat burning comes to an immediate and abrupt halt.
Remember your body has one purpose: keeping you alive. As alcohol is a toxic substance, your body will immediately start to get rid of it. Other metabolic processes, such as fat burning, will drop down the priority list and it’s only after the alcohol has been metabolised and removed from your body, that you can continue burning fat.

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Obesity is the physical manifestation of deeper psychological issues. As a result, your body becomes a victim of bad eating habits and lack of exercise doesn’t do any good either. If you are battling obesity, yoga is a good option. Unless you accept that you are overweight, you won’t make an attempt to become lean and fit; so gracefully acknowledge obesity. Start with small changes in your lifestyle to kick start weight loss. Body toning starts within ten days of a new workout regimen. As you practise different asanas, you feel lighter. But be consistent with your practice, as weight loss takes time. You don’t need to starve; watch what you eat and eat only a light dinner as you won’t do anything for the next seven hours or so. To detox, fast once a week. Have a balanced yogic diet to reduce weight, avoiding junk food and aerated drinks. Yogic postures can be customised to suit your age and health. Let your yoga instructor know if you have back pain or spondylitis. Inch loss happens proportionally as you start your workout. Weight reduction follows and remember to keep practising your yoga. Mental and Physical Benefits of Swimming

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Swimming is a fitness activity whose benefits are recognized by millions of practitioner all over the world. Exercising in the water, whether it is swimming or water aerobics is an excellent physical training for everybody, teenager and elderly citizens, pregnant women and well fit men, overweight people and people recovering from an injury. If you are thinking about starting any fitness activity do not look anywhere else than at your local swimming pool. Keep reading to know why I am advocating so much in favor of the benefits of swimming. Because of the support the water gives to your body, training in the swimming pool is like training in a weightless environment. Your joints and ligaments are not stressed as much as in other dry-land fitness activities such as jogging or tennis. Swimming is therefore a sport virtually free from injuries. Nevertheless, all the muscles of your body are trained very effectively. Because all the swimming movements are gentle and performed with stretched muscles, while you train your strengths and endurance you also train the muscles flexibility. If you start swimming now, you will find yourself stronger and more flexible in a matter of few weeks. Swimming activates all the major muscle groups in your body, but the benefits of swimming go further than just muscle strength. Regular swimmers get an overall conditioning which includes a great improvement on their cardiovascular system. Even just training twice or three times a week you will increase your lactate threshold. This means, your lungs and your heart will be able to support your body during the training effort with more oxygen and a more efficient use of it to fuel your muscles. You will then be able to train harder and improve further or simply to last longer doing any physical exercise. A better fitness level in your body will bring great benefits to your life balance. You will lower your sugar levels, burn calories, and feel mentally stronger to face the challenges of your daily life. Because swimming activates all the major muscle groups in your body it burns more calories than jogging. Not only that, but being easy on your ligaments you won’t get injured as much as going jogging and you will be able to keep up your training throughout the year because you will keep being healthy. To lose weight however, common sense needs to be applied. Training is essential, and the benefits of swimming for losing weight are clear, but you need to keep in mind that you will lose weight only if you burn more calories than you take in. So watch your diet and distribute the meals wisely during the day. A good advice is to try to wait a couple of hours before and after the training session for having something to eat, eat only healthy food and do not forget to drink plenty of water also during your training.
